Job Summary |
The Dean of Academics plays an essential role in support of teaching and learning at Ben Franklin High School by providing exceptional guidance and coaching to teachers to enhance instructional effectiveness, improve student achievement, and foster a culture of continuous professional growth. Reporting to the Principal, this team member will directly evaluate and develop teachers; develop professional development for staff; and organize data across subject areas to inform planning efforts of the administration, Department Chairs, and teachers. Through this work, they will collaborate with educators to develop and implement high-impact teaching strategies, analyze student performance data, and drive instructional excellence across all subject areas. The Dean of Academics is a dedicated and dynamic team member, capable of building positive and productive relationships with colleagues and committed to supporting educators in delivering high-quality instruction and improving student learning outcomes.
Key Responsibilities |
Teacher Coaching and Development:
Establish and support respectful, collaborative relationships with faculty and staff
Directly coach and evaluate a cohort of teachers aligned to expectations and practice outlined by the Principal
Conduct classroom observations, model best practices, and provide targeted feedback to support teacher growth in implementing evidence-based instructional strategies that promote student engagement and achievement
Support the Principal in planning for and implementing systems to support teacher development
Stay current on educational research and trends to inform best practices in teaching and learning
Design and facilitate professional learning opportunities tailored to the needs of teachers and school goals, as needed
Assessment and Data-Driven Instruction:
Assist teachers in analyzing student performance data to inform instruction and interventions
Support the development of formative and summative assessments to measure student progress
Help teachers use data to set goals, differentiate instruction, and improve student outcomes
Support the Principal in planning and leading data-driven planning sessions with Department chairs, administrative staff, and teachers
Academic Planning and Curriculum:
Collaborate with teachers and department chairs to ensure curriculum alignment with state standards and school objectives
Provide resources and guidance on lesson planning, instructional materials, and technology integration
Encourage the use of innovative teaching strategies to meet diverse student needs
Coordinate with Academic Counselors to respond to student needs and coordinate academic support with teachers
Additional responsibilities:
Work closely with school leaders, department chairs, and instructional teams to drive academic excellence
Participate in school-wide initiatives that promote a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement (e.g. Walk-In Wednesday, Instructional Cohort, etc.)
Support new and early-career teachers in acclimating to the school community and developing effective instructional practices
Assist in developing the master schedule
Develop guiding documents and share communication for teacher-facing needs (e.g. Report Card Conferences, Grading Procedures, LEAP Prep, Faculty Google Classrooms, etc.)
Assist in the hiring process for new faculty members

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Thorough knowledge of educational principles and current best practices and the ability to apply them to the needs of the school
Thorough knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices, state testing, and public school administration
Strong instructional, classroom management, and discipline skills
Strong collaboration, interpersonal, oral, written, and communication skills
Ability using student-level data to guide instructional decisions
Ability to organize and prioritize multiple competing tasks and responsibilities of equal importance
Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds
Required Qualifications |
Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience at the high school level.
Strong understanding of instructional best practices, curriculum development, and data-driven decision-making
Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
Experience coaching teachers and leading professional development preferred.
Franklin, founded in 1957, consistently scores as Louisiana's top performing high school by the Louisiana Department of Education, and as a top high school nationally by various reports. The curriculum is taught at honors, gifted/talented, and Advance Placement levels. Annually, students take approximately 1,000 AP exams and more than 80% score a 3, 4, or, 5. One hundred percent gain admission to colleges and universities in Louisiana, the United States, and Internationally.
